As the temperatures drop and the air gets drier, many of us start to notice changes in our skin—but did you know winter can affect your hair just as much?
At Ferdinando Hair, we often see clients struggling with dryness, frizz, or dullness during the colder months. Here’s how winter can impact your hair and what you can do to keep it healthy and beautiful all season long.
1. Winter Air Dries Out Your Hair and Scalp
Cold outdoor air and indoor heating both lack humidity, which pulls moisture from your hair and scalp. This can leave your strands feeling brittle and your scalp dry or flaky.
What to do:- Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner (we love Redken All Soft!)
- Add a weekly deep-conditioning treatment to your routine
- Don’t overwash—stick to 2–3 times a week if possible
2. Static and Frizz Become More Common
You might notice more flyaways or static when wearing hats or scarves. That’s because dry air plus friction equals unwanted static.
What to do:- Use a leave-in conditioner or smoothing serum
- Switch to satin-lined hats or pillowcases
- Lightly spritz your hairbrush with water or a conditioning spray before brushing
3. Breakage and Split Ends Increase
Dry, weakened hair is more prone to breakage—especially with wind exposure or frequent heat styling.
What to do:- Get regular trims to keep ends healthy
- Use heat protectant before blow drying or styling
- Air-dry your hair when you can, and avoid heading outside with damp hair
4. Hair Can Appear Dull and Lifeless
Without moisture, hair loses its natural shine and can look flat or tired.
What to do:- Add a gloss or toner at the salon to refresh colour and shine
- Ask your stylist about in-salon treatments that lock in hydration
- Rinse hair in cool water at the end of your shower to seal the cuticle
No 5. Hair Growth May Slow Slightly
Reduced sun exposure (less vitamin D) and changes in circulation during colder months may subtly slow down hair growth for some people.
What to do:- Eat a nutrient-rich diet with plenty of vitamins and protein
- Consider a hair-friendly supplement (ask your stylist first)
- Stimulate the scalp with regular brushing or gentle massage
